“If only…”

One Rose

When we think back sometimes we might wonder:   "If only I had done this," or "If only I hadn’t done that." I guess that what regret is all about—wishing we had done things differently to change an outcome. But it’s not always a simple cause and effect.

Maybe we think: "If only this would have happened," or "If only that had not happened." Things would be so different, right?

Especially when situations or relationships are not as we’d like them to be, we think back and wonder if anything would have changed this outcome. Was there something we could have done—anything that could have happened—that would have made all the difference and we would have had a better outcome?

But, it’s not just about our decisions and those of others. We all come to learn eventually that no matter how well or how hard we try to create our lives the way we want, or think we want, there will always be external forces (things that are out of our control) that can change everything—sometimes in a split-second.

I just watched and enjoyed the movie “Sliding Doors” for the second time. It’s from 1998, staring Gwyneth Paltrow, and uses parallel time-lines to explore two different paths one’s life might take. It explores the concept of fate and how even simple moments can change our lives dramatically; it reminds of us how timing can be everything.

More on this next time in my blog:  Free-will or fate?

Anticipation…

 Mansion at Bok Tower

On a positive note, looking forward to something is basically how we define the word anticipation. It’s an expectation of a coming event. We have hope, eagerness, and maybe a feeling of excitement in the pit of our stomachs. We can hardly wait for it to happen! We imagine how wonderful it will be—how happy it will make us—when… (fill in the blank however you wish).

It could be something BIG like the birth of a newborn, maybe an upcoming vacation, (I’m thinking about friends moving from out-of-state to our neighborhood), or it could even be the piece of cheesecake you know you’re going to have after dinner today. Yes! And you are happy now just thinking about it right now.

Also, it’s important to be aware of the joy that the anticipation itself brings into our lives—the time before “it” happens. It’s like the saying that it’s not the destination that’s important, but the journey, right? We need to simply be aware of that time, too, because it’s part of the journey as well, and is just as important.

When we become aware of something, we pause for at least a moment and think, thus making deeper, longer-lasting impressions in our hearts and minds.

We are not guaranteed the future, or even our next breath. Understanding this, I try my best to be happy in the moment, anticipating, and when or if “it” happens, there’s the possibility even more joy can be found. This is part of having The Inside Advantage.

Remember Carly Simon’s song?  We can never know about the days to come, but we think about them anyway. And I wonder if I’m really with you now, or just chasing after some finer day. Anticipation…

Feeling Sad, Angry, or Fearful?

 Bok Tower

Reflections:  First, I’m thinking of my Daddy today on the date of his birth -- Happy Happy Birthday my precious one! Miss you so much!

You can try this sometime if you like to help release negative feelings (sadness, anger, or fear):

When a strong negative feeling appears in your heart and related thoughts enter your mind, instead of pushing them away or deeper inside, sit there and give yourself permission, and a few minutes, to experience these thoughts and feelings for a change. Let the tears come if needed. Then, imagine the negative energy leaving your mind and body as if you are being cleansed on the inside; I imagine it leaving through the soles of my feet.

Now there is more room within -- sense being filled with God’s golden light and love, pouring through the top of your head, flowing down through your heart and body all the way to your toes. Breathe in life, feel God’s love and the love you have for yourself.

Let your heart be uplifted and joyful—feeling light and carefree! This is a great way not only to treat yourself with loving kindness, but also to connect with God more deeply.

This is what I call gaining The Inside Advantage.

It’s important to take more control over how we feel; it’s not good for us to linger for long in negative energy.

May you be blessed each and every day!

What color are their eyes?

 Eyes Closed

Whose eyes? I’m talking about the eyes of people in our lives—the ones we talk to face-to-face. Do we look at them as they stand in front of us when we talk or listen? Do we look deeply or do we ignore the “window to their soul?”

You probably know the eye colors of family members, but can you recall the color of your friends’ eyes? What about people you are acquainted with? Or someone you meet for the first time?

I encourage you to take a good look when someone stands before you and presents who they are to you. Look more deeply into their souls and see the connection you have to them as spiritual beings. It’s what we all want and need, isn’t it?

Namaste means “the spirit in me honors the spirit in you.” Seeing color in the eyes of others means you are taking the time to at least try to connect on a deeper level. It's part of what I call having The Inside Advantage. It’s something to think about…

I invite you to look around on my website to see what might brighten your day.

One New Year’s Resolution

 Reflection

I have just one resolution for the new year:  Get a daily dose of joy.

If you haven’t decided what to resolve for 2016, maybe this one is for you.

If those uplifting moments of joy don’t come to you automatically without thinking your about them, then it’s up to you to create them for yourself.

Look for smiles on the faces of others; give a smile to someone you don’t know or a hug to someone you do. Go outside, take a deep breath and smell the fresh air. Pick a flower or plant one; look at it up close and really see it, and if it has a fragrance, inhale deeply.

Look up and see the blue sky and white clouds, the sunrise or sunset; look for the moon, planets, and stars in the dark night sky. Take a walk in nature and just look around—beauty and joy is everywhere!

Be creative:  throw colorful paint onto a canvas, make something—anything because it doesn’t matter what it is or how it turns out. The joy is in expressing yourself.

Cook or order a nice meal, take a picture of it so you can appreciate it. People sometimes laugh at me when I take photos of food, but I know that what I’m doing is truly appreciating the beauty of it (like a work of art) and the fact that this is about to be gone from sight in minutes. This food will nourish me and become part of my body—the body I honor as a gift from God. I try to do my best to nurture not only my body, but also my mind and spirit. Loving myself is a reflection of loving what God has created – me!

Taking in as many moments of joy as I can is a way to treat myself with loving kindness. Creating moments of joy for others is a way of treating them with loving kindness. We all need and deserve it.

Wishing you a happy and healthy new year, overflowing with peace, joy, and love.

I invite you to browse my website to see what might brighten your day and help you gain The Inside Advantage.
